I don't think it goes by age, but by weight.

it's not age you base it on, rather weight. If I remember right it's 40 lbs and 4 years old. If your child is under 40 lbs and over 4 years old they still need a car seat.

I am refering to a car seat and not the booster seat many places require after you get out of a car seat.

My daughter says age 6 or 60 pounds in CA. My grandson is about 45 pounds and still too small not to use one, the seat belt doesn't fit right. We use a booster car seat, not full size.

When there is no longer a seat on the market that they can fit into. That means they can be in a seat until 80 pounds right now.

The requirement are dependent on you state. But here in CA the law is 6 years and 60 lbs. I want to say that most states are using the age and the weight requirements

it depend on the state some states have an age and some have height some have both. In Idaho it is four feet nine inches or seven years old there might be a weight factor too I'd check if I was you
