My mom wants to translate her grandmothers journal that is written in shorthand (a text originally used by court recorders before machines and all that). I also would be interested in learning it just for fun. Any online resources or books? Perferably online and free.

You'll have to find out what shorthand your grandmother used.
In my experience court shorthand writers use Pitman's shorthand. Here's a link. http://www.crazycolour.com/os/print/writing_07.shtml

If it was Gregg's shorthand, here's a link for that: http://class.universalclass.com/chash/g/s/1/gs1110.htm

You could do a search on Google or Yahoo search for Gregg Shorthand. It used to be the standard form of shorthand that most offices used.
