keep them on a leash when they're young and theyll learn they need to stay close to you if they don't want the uncomfortable pull of the leash.

I own a Australian Cattledog and Dingo mix. In case you don't know, a Dingo is an Australian Coyote. Needless to say, the dog is quite energetic. To make matters worse, I live in the mountains where there are endless things to explore. Of course, my dog wanted to explore everyone of those things. For the longest time I tried to get my dog not to run off. I tried every trick I knew. Finally, I gave in and just put her on a harness and attached it outside to a pole so she couldn't run too far. Since my dog is quite smart, she kept figuring out how to escape and take off the leash on her own! After years of this, an idea suddenly came to mind: in order to make her stop running off, I have to make her stop wanting to run off! Knowing that she hated baths, I made sure that everytime she ran off, I'd give her an extra long and extra hot bath. Then, I would yell at her and keep telling her "bad dog." She hates being called bad dog because she knows she's such a good dog and I tell her often. She knows that when I do tell her bad dog, she did something really wrong. After doing this for a long long time, she finally gave in and doesn't run away anymore. Perhaps you could do the same. Hope I helped. Don't give in!

You make being by your side the best possible place for the dog to be.. thats it thats all. If you make life so good for your dog and enjoyable they will never run off because they dont think anything is more interesting, rewarding or fun as being around you. Thats why my dogs never run away even if the gate is accidently left open, and thats why my dog only jumps the fence to get INTO the yard, and thats why my dogs never run off they know who has the good food, the affection and all the toys and games.. lol

Obedience training. Simply having them on a leash isn't enough. I have seen dogs who have been on a leash, but not trained, and they pull on the leads all them time, sometimes pulling the person holding them down. You need to start an obedience class, and teach the dog some good manners, or they will run off even if you have a leash on them.
Good luck!

You can't. You should fence your yard or buy or build a dog run if you want him to be outside some or leashwalk him. He will get hit by a car and killed or bother someone else if you allow him to run loose.

Usually Poodles do that for no reason, I suppose they think you're playing with them, they like to be chased around. Is a good idea to take advantage of that if your dog is a Poodle, by playing around and teaching her how to swim.

Lots of training. My dog, Duke, used to jet out the door every time he got a chance. And most people don't enjoy having a psychotic pit bull running around the street. :)
Train 'em to sit - still - even when the door is wide open and no one is guarding it. It worked with me - it'll work with you.
