Very low body fat, less than about 11%, can cause enough hormonal disturbance that women have irregular periods or stop althogether. Rather than improving performance, this can lead to bone loss and serious problems like stress fractures.
I know a few professional endurance athletes who have become pregnant. They just were careful not to let their body fat get too low.
I don't know the physical reason for this, or if anyone has studied it, but all of them came back to their sport in a short time stronger and faster than before childbirth.

A lot of female athletes, such as Olympic gymnasts and figure skaters, do work out and diet to the point where they can hold off their period and keep their bodies from otherwise physically maturing. However, since women ovulate before their first period (about two weeks prior), working your body like that is not a reliable form of birth control, since you never really know if you'd menstruate.

I heard that women who have an extremely low body fat risk messing up their menstrual cycle.
But I'm sure that it's still possible...especially when they gain some body fat again.
