My friend drops all of his beer bottles to the bottom of the ocean floor. This bugs me because I see it as littering. He said that the bottle provides a habitat for little creatures and that glass is essentially sand anyway so if proposes no harm to the environment. Does anyone have any views either way on this or maybe something he or myself isn't thinking of??? The bottles don't have labels on them, so the paper wont pollute.

Whby won't he recycle them? He may get some money back and avoid environmental costs of producing more bottles. They are 100% recycable, and in fact one third of glass is recycled, so it is not a problem for him to find a recycler.
Tell him glass is actually made of soda ash and limestone, not quartz.
Look, he likes the ocean. Tell him that recycling glass creates 50% less water pollution than making a new bottle. Tell him that it will be a million years before the glass becomes sand; it's true. So if he wants that ocean to be enjoyalbe, he has to keep it clean.

theres already I forget the numbers but something like 1 ton of litter per square meter in the ocean already, the fish already have habitats and most of his litter will likely wash ashore anyways.

If he drops it in water deeper than about 500 feet, then its okay; IMHO.

Less than that, some of the bottles are going to get washed to shore, then it littering.

Your friend is lazy, misinformed, or FOS.

He is littering, and could be fined if caught.
