So I recently met someone who I really like. The more we hang out together and the more I get to know her, the more I like her. She just got out of a relationship that meant a lot to her (she's still in love). But she tells me she really likes me and doesn't want to go back, but there's still love there that she needs to cope with. I understand and don't want to push it. I'm torn though because I don't want to get hurt. If I like her and she gets back with her ex, then I'm left broken...again. If I like her, back off, and she doesn't get back with her ex, I'm left alone. Should I back off a little so she can sort out her feelings? Or stick around and let her know I care?

Stick around and be her friend. Let her know that you want her to be able to sort out her feelings and decide what she wants and needs. But you will be there for her. She will know that you care about her and will not have pressure to make a decision that could hurt both of you. Besides when she sees how great you are with her that could help in the long run.

Stay on the sidelines and watch you don't want to be her rebound because that will not work out, hang around her but don't get to close.

if you don't give her room to breathe she's going to asphyxiate. Let her have her space, otherwise your risk ending up as a rebound relationship and nothing more. Call her from time to time, let her know you are there for her, but don't push it. She needs time to heal on her own.

stick around, stay a friend and just a friend that way you'll avoid being emotionally distressed.
