Hi there, can anyone help me out? I don't know how to travel from NYC to Long Island, I need to meet a client there. I'd like to use the fastest and most effective way, trains or bus and if cabs what would be the ongoing rate? How long will the distance take?
Any contact details for Train or Buses would be great as the phone numbers on the web are for emergency only ! Cheers everyone

You don't have to go to Jamaica to board the Long Island Railroad. You can get on right at Penn Station (34th, between 7th and 8th) in Manhattan. You can get detailed transit directions to anywhere in the New York metro area at Trips 123 (http://160.79.231.160/trip_planner/default.asp). Just type in your starting and ending addresses.

You really need to tell us where on the Island. As many have mentioned it is a LONG island- about 120 miles x 25 miles or so
The LIRR pretty much covers most of it from tip to tip and shore to shore.
OK a promise is a promise
Take the Long Island Railroad from Penn Station - 34th & 7th Ave to the hempstead station. that should take an hour
from hempstead you have two choices
you can take a bus N 70 ,71,72 down hemptead turnpike and get off at Glenn Curtiss Blvd and walk the 1/4 mile or so to the office building
or you can take a cab for about 10 bucks
If you opt for the bus buy the metro card for it when you buy the LIRR ticket

The LIRR is the most direct away if you are not driving. The LIRR is pricey but much cheaper than a cab. Cabs will charge you a lot to go into Long Island. The LIRR is really slow but it travels to most parts of Long Island. Traveling back and forth between LI and the city really sucks. Driving is the easiest but depending on the time you can run into some major traffic.

I know exactly where you are going as my Mother in law lives right around the corner in East meadow. Instead of taking the Hempstead line, Take a train to HICKSVILLE and Take the M48/49 bus to merrick av and walk the 1/4 mile, or take a cab from the hicksville station(L.I. Yellow Cab-516-931-1111 and get a price quote) right to the building.

Where in Long Island? It's not called Long Island for no reason, it's a LONG island!
Most likely train is your best bet as cabs would be pricy, the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)

ok my friend, you need to get to jamaica station by taking the E, J, or Z train or taking the LIRR then transfer onto the hempstead line. Ride the hempstead line to the end of the line in hempstead then get onto to N43 bus to Uniondale or take a taxi from there. good luck.

For the geographically challenged... walk accross the Brooklyn bridge and you are on Long Island.
