It depends on what your goals are... if you are hoping to be an F1 driver, then you are close to 20 years late in starting! Likewise, chances of piloting a competitive prototype at Le Mans will be close to none... and even a seat with a front runner in any major series would be unlikely. But all of those options comprise probably less than 1% of all racing options! Though, even with all of that, the biggest problem you will face is the mention of it being a career. The fact is that for the vast majority of people that go racing, it drains our wallets (often at an alarming rate), and certainly doesn't add to it.
There are many classes with great racing among the amatuer ranks. And success here can easily lead to some of the lesser Pro series or even higher. Best place to start would be looking for local opportunities to Autocross your car and begin to develop your driving skills. Additionally, check out any local opportunities for go karting. Both of these are alot of fun, and are great for working on skills that need to become reactionary when you are on the track.
If you wind up being good enough, and successful enough, you may get chances to drive professionally, and even earn money. But be aware that there is alot to learn, and it can take quite a bit of seat time to develop those skills to a point where you stand a chance of being successful (but it is really very close to being TOO much fun)!

It's never really too late, but it will be MUCH more difficult. You may be very talented, but your reflexes will be slower than a younger guy, and anyone your age that has been racing for years will still have slightly faster reflexes. Of course, it also depends on the type of racing you intend on doing (you'd be at a disadvantage in go-karts - too heavy compared to the kids that usually do this sort of racing. Yes, power-to-weight ratios really are THAT important.)
Whatever you try, it will cost you plenty. You have to finance yourself until you can show your talent - at least enough to start getting sponsorship. Getting into racing isn't all that hard - just buy an old race car and do vintage racing - but getting someone to pay you to do it is another thing altogether.
Good luck!

Its never too late, but it helps to have a lot of experience at a younger age. Most of the professionals start out go-karting at like 5 or 6 and then race their way all through the ranks.

Its never really to late. You can have a career of racing, but not make it to the top. It all depends how good you are. If you are a natural that can find a good backer, the sky is the limit.

Nope. It's never too late. The chances aren't great for them to become pro, but the person can make decent money at the local track.
