I have a 3 inch utility knife I use during backpacking trips, and wonder what the regulations are. Ideally, I'd bring everything as carry-on, but don't think this is likely (my stuff isn't bulky/will fit into a backpack). Can I bring the knife through the security screen (before entering the terminals) and check my backpack/knife before I board?

I would suggest that you check you the knife. Before you travel you should go to the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/ they have the complete list of what you can and can not bring on the aircraft with you in both your checked and carry on luggage.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

I know the rules have changes lately. Tools (such as screwdrivers) that are under 6 inches from end to end are now allowed when they didn't used to be. I don't know if that also changed the rules on small knives. Check http://www.tsa.gov for a complete list. Also check the liquids rule. All bug spray, sunscreen, toiletries must be under 3 oz and in a zip-lock bag to be a carry-on. And be aware lighters and lighter fluid are not allowed at all. Strike anywhere matches also not allowed. You are allowed 4 books of regular matches but they must be 'on your person' not in your bag (checked or carry-on)

I just checked the TSA site - unless your camping knife is plastic or a butter knife - then no, it must be checked.

check, check, check. Don't try to carry on as it is considered a dangerous weapon. Better safe than sorry.

You can just leave it home and buy a new one at your destination.

You may be able to request gate check of it, but not sure if they will or not.

No knives are allowed on flights! Check everything. Gawd they won't even allow fingernail files if they are metal. But to be sure check with your airlines. Whoever gave the thumbs down has not gone on a flight i take it.

If you don't check it, they will take it away!
