How do you know when it's just a booty call or if he wants something more?

If the primary purpose for him calling is to have sex, that;s a booty call. If he invites you out for a date, you do things together outside the bedroom, then you have something more.

There's a few hints at first, like he is only really interested in sex not hanging out, he never calls to go to the movies or out to dinner but only to come to his place, and he often doesn't give much time when making plans (like he will call the same day or night).
However, the only real way to find out and not be hoping that there is something more is just to ask him, plain and simple. I'm sure he will appreciate the fact that you just want to clear things up so neither of you are getting hurt. After all, I'm sure he would feel just a little bit bad if you thought he wanted more when really you were just a booty call. So just ask him, so that way you know exactally what he wants. Then you can decide whether or not you want to be his "booty call" or if you're looking for a real relationship.

If he is slurring his words and is calling you at 2 am. This is a booty call. If he asks you out to dinner or to go do something and hang out. Usually this call will happen during the day or evening. This is something more. Hanging out at his house and watching a movie is tricky, but MOST of the time its a booty call.

Because he doesn't end the phone call with "...and wash up before you come over." If you can't honestly discern his intentions by spending time with him, you're too clueless to be in a relationship right now. Really, it's not brain surgery figuring out what someone wants. If you don't know, newsflash: ask him. If he gives you a straight answer, great. Now you know. If he doesn't, it's a booty call.

if all he wants to do is have sex with you and he doesn't want to hang out at any other time.. doing normal activities then your just a booty call
try and hang out with him and not have sex see what happens
