I have a friend who has a family member who works at a Marriot Hotel. My friend gets hooked up because he's family. Are there other ways to get hooked up?

Haha, I have a friend that can get some hook up because he's friends with the manager at one place.. Sometimes friends offer others things at free of charge or even lesser.
So, either work there, or find someone and get close to that person, chill and stuff, and you may just get lucky.

If you have a local travel agent, go see her after you've gotten your prices on the Internet. Tell her that you've been on the net (they're quite used to this) and want to see what she can do for you. Don't give her your prices! If she comes up with some good deals, you're set. Hotels all reduce their prices if they are not sold. Rather a small earning than nothing at all. Visit http://www.findaroom.org which handles a wide range of hotels and different suppliers.
