Go to Distrowatch...

http://www.distrowatch.com

You will find links to all the best Linux distributions there... start with PCLinuxOS, which is easy to use...

For most distros 256Mb of RAM is fine, along with at least a 500Mhz processor. My old Pentium 3 800mhz with 256Mb RAM runs VectorLinux beautifully... some distros will work quite well with only 128Mb RAM.

You're a hero for trying Linux - the best operating system in the world.... welcome!

Your best bet is to Google for Linux, you will find many sites which will help you with installation and any other questions you may have. There are a huge number of Linux Operating systems (distros) many can be run direct from CD without actually installing. This gives you a chance to try them out and find your favourite. You could also buy the Micro mart Magazine, in the classified ad's you will find loads of distros advertised for a couple of quid.

Yes it is wholly possible, although you gave the wrong label, we need distro/brand name and that 8.1 suppose to be the brand version not the version of Linux kernel core.

I've done TCP/IP install of Mandrake 8.2 over a home network years ago; it is no different than over Internet just that over Internet would be very slow. But I never use SUSE. Although I think there is no preset installation source to begin with.

I am a little confused by this.
Linux kernel is at 2. something.
I assume you are refering to an distribution of Linux.
For these, you usually need to download the CD iso files and burn them to CDRs.

I have a version of Linux which is small enough to run from a floppy disc.

The easiest LINUX versions to install are UBUNTU or XUBUNTU.
