When I run on the treadmill, my calves kill me after running 15-20 minutes. Im thinking its the shoe so I am looking for a good shoe that will give me that support so my calves wont hurt. Suggestions?

Ive been running for 5-6 years (gym), but here and there my calves hurt. I was thinking it was my form but also the shoe.

Im not a big guy (5'8, 160), but I think your right it's my running form. I tend to take long stride as to short strides. Maybe that can be assisting in my calves hurting. Im not old either (at least I think im not: 27?). I have the same running shoes for 2 years and maybe is time to replace them. They are in good shape though.

Could be the shoe

Could be your running form

Or, if you're new to running, and haven't been doing it long, it may be that you just need to give them time to strengthen and adapt.

FWIW, are you sure its a cross-training shoe you want, and not a running shoe? Cross-trainers are usually not very good for running. In fact they're generally more fashion statement than functional.

A couple more thoughts:

If you're older, sometimes the achilles stiffens and shortens a bit with age, which could stress the calves. Some guys I know put orthotics in the heels of their shoes to elevate a bit and reduce the tension.

If you're a big guy, the Brooks Beast is the best cushioned and stabilized shoe out there. I'm not big, but my 6'3" 240lb son recommends them highly.

You could also find a running coach to analyze your stride. Sometimes you can find a guy (free) that knows what he's doing at a running specialty store.

New Balance makes good lightweight shoes.
