I think soon enough this hype between the Mexicans, the Americans, and the Canadians is going to amount to a fart in a tornado...there are some global issues that dwarf this simple-minded distraction.
Geographically, on a global scale, humanity is approaching the cusp of it's environmental sustainability.
Political ideological 'borders' around the world will be challenged by nature, and 'your' simplistic concept will prevail over any and all social-national-cultural-political-developmental-financial-definitions we now recognize.
How ever...don't think for an instant that the comming change's are going to be easy ...or with out violence...or sudden... the transitions ahead will conform to events and results and consequences environmentally demanding,...not so much to political agenda, or popular opinion, or social orders.

The geographic position of the United states is sort of at the midlands of the map: it was decided for some reason that it's the border between 'north america' and 'south america', two abstracts. However, there's nothing special about North America: it's not like one hemisphere is better than the other, so most people don't pay two much attention to it.

Anyhow, assuming that you're asking why we don't call people from Mexico North American's, it's because of the way we partitioned off the U.S, and that, I guess, is that. Just my two cents.
