I'm going to spend 6 months in Thailand as an exchange student, and I want to start learning thai at home.

I live in a small town and there are no courses, so I think a language software will do.
"rosetta stone" is expensive, but I heard that once you have bought it, you can use it for many languages... is that true?

please, can anyone tell me other programs or web sites?

thank you!!

Rosetta Stone is composed of two CD-ROMs. The first one is the program installation CD-ROM. The second one is the Language Pack CD-ROM. You need to install the installation CD-ROM always. After the installation, you need the Language Pack CD-ROM. The Language Pack CD-ROM is specific to a particular language, in your case Thai. All the different languages have their own Language Pack CD-ROM's (Spanish, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc.). If you want to study Thai language, you can buy the Rosetta Stone Thai-Language Package. It contains the program installation CD-ROM and the Thai Language Pack CD-ROM. Later on, if you wish to study another language let's say French, you only need to buy the French Language Pack CD-ROM.

I have included some web-sites below for you to start with. Also if you wish, you can give me your e-mail address. I have many audio mp3 files for learning the basics and to practice listening and speaking very common Thai words by yourself. I can share them with you. You can click my avatar then the Email-icon to send e-mail to me.

There is also a very popular book. "Thai For Beginners" by Benjamin Poomsan Becker. It is very popular among tourists who visit Thailand.

I got a tape course that seemed to help, I ended up not going so stopped after a few chapters. I believe it was Conversational Thai by Pimsleur. I can still impress the thais I run into with the few words I remember.
