You had an prolonged answer on accurate yet i visit inform you that in case you paint from fat skinny, no count number how warm or humid your paint will crack. I paint interior this style of impasto and favor to apply my paint out of the tube because i love it thick. even as drying between layers contained in the summer I placed my portray contained in the storage even as it receives extremely extremely warm. I stay in Texas and the summer is in a great number of cases between ninety to one hundred and ten ranges. i'm no longer certain the way you're portray, yet I paint in layers. Your base paint should be thinner and easily use mineral spirits, then as you outfitted and enable dry you should use different mediums alongside with linseed oil. in case you take advantage of linseed oil on your lower than paint with time this is going to crack. i'd not in any respect advise portray moist on moist except your layers are very skinny.

Yes it (obviously) can crack. To avoid this paint each layer wet. When painting the background do not cover the area where the subject is going.
If you wait for each layer to dry, the upper layer will crack while the lower layer is curing (drying) It takes years for oil to dry.
I use acrylic to avoid this. acrylic is very forgiving.

hunnybun has a good answer...it does look cool and vintage...i get paid alot of mony to make things look cracked and old in my work.
i worked on a mural once where we shot a clear crackle meduim over the entire mural and then handrubbed umber over the whole thing to catch in the cracks and the thing looked 500 years old and absolutly smashing.
however if you want to prevent future cracking i think the generous use of gesso on the canvas will help...and i ad a bit of penetrol to my artist oils...gives them a bit more flex when they cure.

If the chemicals were'nt mixed right it could crack. Not all oil paintings are shiny.

Well, if your painting is cracked, and it is an oil painting, then apparently oil paintings can crack.
