For some reason, the insurance coverage I have seems to go up every year (and because I moved recently it jumped up another $60 a month). My wife and I get crappy coverage on top of it.

To make things more hectic; we are pregnant (she's pregnant -not me, but you get the point). And beause Maternity coverage runs another $500 a month it isn't affordable on a student income (I am currently in Law School, while she works).

So, if anyone has any information on how they managed the pregnancy, or even just real life, without insurance (or on what insurance?), I would be extremely appreciative if you could offer it up. I Might even give you the best answer....or whatever (who knows, that may motivate some people)

So, I'm looking for affordable health insurance coverage. It doesn't need to cover maternity...I know thats expensive everywhere. What I am looking for is something under 300 a month that still covers some outpatient surgery, or even more than 2 doctor visits a year!!

You're in a tough spot, my condolences. The best solution is going to depend on what state you're in. Every state has different rules, regulations, markets and programs. But here's some things to look for:
1. If you wife is eligible for coverage at her work, buy it. In many states it will cover the pregnancy.
2. Some states have programs for low income pregnant women (and their children). In California it's called AIM (Access for Infants and Mothers). You can learn more at http://www.aim.ca.gov/english/AIMHome.asp. If you're not in California, I suggest you call your local legislator or try a Yahoo! Search
3. You may be able to qualify for individual coverage that doesn't cover maternity. Again, your options will depend on where you live. A qualified local agent will know what's available. The challenge is to find a good agent. If you're in California you can find one at http://www.insuranceneighborhood.com/. Click on the AgentLocator tab. Outside of California try the agents' association at http://www.nahu.org/. Click on the Consumer Information tab and then on the Find an Agent link. An agent who is a member of NAHU is likely to be more professional than someone you get out of the book (no guarantees, but it improves your odds).
4. Ask your school administrators if there's any school health programs. Some schools have arrangements.
5. Sit down with the hospital where you'll have the baby and ask if they'll work out a discounted fee for your maternity (ok, your wife's maternity, but you get the idea). Many hospitals will offer something, especially if you can pay some portion of it up front.

Your wife should at least apply for DSHS. That will cover her whole pregnancy, and you won't have to pay a thing. Thats what I did when I was pregnant. Its usually easy to get if she is pregnant. Also look up Basic health insurance for you and your wife.
