how do I find out what program is needed to open a pic file?

My system crashed and the pc repair shop was able to save most of my pics but they are in a different format. It id a .dpp I think or atleast something very similar looking to that. I am not on that pc right now. Anyway, I cant open them with any programs I have and I don't know what it needs.

The .pdf file extention is much more common. This extention is portable document format read by Adobe's Acrobat Reader - and a some generalist software like Preview on Mac OSX.
