yeah when you overfill a washing machine it can burn out the motor. Usually newer models will have a saftey so that the machine will shut off before ireprebale damage is done to the internal components. Also another common problem is off center gravity loads. Like if you're doing linens or towels or other big things they can all get bunched up on one side and cause an imbalance in the machine, possibly breaking internal mechanics.
