Like Cherry and Jake said, IE7 has lots going on in the background. Try the free version of Firefox instead. Compare the performance of both browsers on similar pages - may give you an idea if the problem is IE7 or just your internet connection speed.

You need to give more details. What's your RAM? What's your operating system, XP or Vista or Win2k? Did you update from IE6 or did the machine come with IE7?

IE is slower than Firefox in my experience in loading pages. See if changing web browsers helps. Make sure you have decent RAM. With all of the DRM and other updates Microsoft has put out, anything less than 500MB and your system will suffer. Even if you're running XP. How old is your hard drive? Faulty, slow hard drives will cause programs to load and operate slowly. What type of web page are you loading first as your home page? Script, graphic, movie, and cookie loaded pages naturally slow down your browser. Try making your home page something simple like Google or a blank page and see if that improves IE's opening time.

Well, you could try upgrading the RAM on your computer. If your computer is making noise, that means that it's having trouble loading, and that it's used up a lot of space.
If your computer has never had speed problems before, then obviously, you should change from IE7, which is most likely the problem.

IE uses a phishing scanner to make sure the site you go to is the site you intend. It takes a little longer for it to scan.
