I had the same problem with one of my daughters - I tried everything I could think of and when nothing else worked, I gave her one last chance, telling her I was going to cut it of she had it in her mouth again. The next day, we were at Supercuts and she got a very short cut. She hated it, but when it grew out, she never put it in her mouth again. Sometimes, tough love is the only way out!

If you aren't willing to cut her hair shorter then something so simple as a pony tail if it's not already been tried OR you could make a big deal of a "day at the salon" with her and make a big deal of how keeping your hair neat and pretty is a big thing for a girl...sometimes all kids need is a point in the right direction for why something is important to really understand what they are doing wrong...it might sound simple but sometimes if you give a kid a chance to make their own decisions you might be surprised at their choices being the right ones.

Keep a calender near her dressing table, and provide 1 sticker for each day without biting her hair.
After a few good days offer an award her for good behavior, with new hair pins and bows.
Keeping her hair up high in a pony tail will help. Especially in the beginning of trying to learn new habits. Also, Suave sells a detaingle and strawberry or watermelon scented spritz. Use in the morning when styling hair. Maybe a slick, wet look jell may work too to help distract her from munching on her strands.
Good luck to you both.

Shave her thoroughly bald and then say in case you hold chewing your hair whilst it grows returned sick do it returned. this could probable traumatise her adequate into struggling with. then you definately can sought out the subject concerns whilst she gets older by potential of sending her to a decrease and enable them to undertaking approximately her problems. Its much less of a worry this way for you average. Or look at what the psychological reason for her chewing her hair is. Does it stem from some deep inner subject concerns approximately habit on the mummy and her detachment from you. This became up until now solved by potential of pacifiers yet now that has been got rid of as an outlet it has transfered directly to this selection. attempt to look on the basis of the undertaking and does it stem from her feeling of lack of self assurance between her and your self. Or likely its because of the fact she is 5 and loves to bite her hair and you're able to recover from it because of the fact it won't do her any harm and in basic terms occurs to bypass against what your self made illusory image of what an outstanding baby is and how they could behave is. on the different hand you're able to consistently get her to suck her thumb particularly. Why do not you ask your baby if she thinks that's an outstanding or undesirable to bite her hair and then ask her why she thinks that. As she is 5 her likely reaction to you asking those questions is i think of WHY? so MUM WHY?

Hair chewing is not "just a faze". It can be really serious. My daughter's pediatrician had a patient who had to have a ball of hair surgical removed. The girl was a hair chewer.
My suggestion is that you put her braid her her and then secure any loose ends with clip. You may even want to put a hair wrap or bandanna over that. If that doesn't work have her hair cut really short.

The best thing you can do is either get her hair cut to a length where it won't reach in her mouth - or wear her hair up everyday. I don't think it would do any good to punish her and such - she's not being defiant, it's a bad habit, she probably doesn't even realize she's doing it until you tell her to stop..

I have dealt with this!
I bought stuff called "bitter apple" at the pet store, it is made to keep animals from chewing, but perfectly safe for people. It did not discolor her hair and worked like magic!

I would just tell her that if she wants long hair she has to stop chewing on her hair, or you will have no choice but to make it shorter.

i use to do that. my mom would put my hair away from my face by braiding it . if her hair is to short for a braid take her to the solon and have here hair put in corn rows about halfway back. it will keep it from her face and you can explain to her its not a good habit and then tell her if she continues to do this you will have to cut her hair short. i think that would do it
