A tiny cartilage piercing is NOTHING compared to some of the other things I've seen. Most jobs do not care about that one tiny extra hole. Your mother is being a mom and you're doing something she doesn't approve of.
The only thing unhealthy about a piercing is that if you don't take care of it, you can get an infection. But that won't happen if you go to a reputable piercer, have the piercing done the correct way with the needle and take care of it. Piercing guns are awful! Avoid any 'piercer' using them
http://wiki.bmezine.com/index.php/Piercing_gun
The only way your year would literally split is if you were to rip the earring right out. With small gauge jewelry there is something known as the cheese cutter effect:

But this can be easily avoided by having the piercing done by a professional.
Your mom might just be worried about your safety. Talk to her about it and tell her that you can take care of this and that you'll have it done safely by a professional.

Your mom is making a way big deal about a tiny thing, there are so many things out there now, she should be happy your not asking for your tongue pierced, my mom flipped when I had that done, she is still mad at me about it.. I've had my cartilage pierced twice for about a good 4 years now.. On a pain scale, the cartilage hurt less than getting my bottom lobes pierced the 2nd, and 3rd times.. It'll get kinda hot for about 20 or so minutes.. But just use the antiseptic piercing stuff, and it'll be all good..
It's not socially unacceptable either, it's not going to stop you from getting a job, or getting in to college, it's your ears.. It's not like your going to have big plugs in your ears!!.. Your mom needs to chill out..

It is except able because it is the style NOW. the only drawback is that it most likely will leave marks or discoloration on your ears at a later time in your life or maybe even holes that catch skin cells and oil in the holes that might look a little dirty. The holes might not close completely, which I don't think they will but if you do this keep your ear area lobes & all clean. take care of your ears like you do your face and use sunscreen to keep the pigment color from giving you those spots where those piercing are or were. (as you get older). Please don't pierce you toung now that is nasty. Good Luck and maybe your mom and you can come to some kind of comprimize. Oh first impressions do count but I guess it depends on what kind of job your looking for and they do come out.

properly, ear lobe piercings were socially time-honored - or perhaps seen a standing image - considering historic cases, and that i guess people discover that established. yet even although different piercings look to were round a lengthy time period, they're nevertheless truly present day. some people merely are not used to the idea. in case you extremely opt for to pierce your lip, do not hearken to what people say. it is your lip, no longer theirs. merely you'd be intending to take solid care of the clean piercing and save it sparkling! Oh, and about cartilage (top ear) piercing - that is advantageous and that is a starting to be vogue, even though it hurts a lot extra and takes two times as lengthy to proper heal earlier you may start monkeying with it. solid success!

What's "socially acceptable" is changing. I was in the bank the other day, and one of the tellers had a nose ring. I'm a receptionist, and I have a nose piercing. My mom feels the same way yours' does, but times are changing.
The one problem with cartilage piercings is that they can be hard to heal. My nose ring still has issues, but it's not infected, there is just a bump.

It definitely will affect you. Besides not getting jobs or anything, socially people will get the wrong impression of you. Have piercings(especially in your face) will make it really really hard for you to find a normal job that pays well. You can go ahead and get piercings if you want just know that you're not going to be looked at the same. It's sad, but it is a cruel world.

Your mom is just being crazy paranoid because I have three cartilage piercings in my left ear and an industrial bar(if you don't know it is about an inch and a half barbell through each side of the cartilage) in my right none of these piercings have held me back from getting a job or from being excepted socially

I am 25 and I have had one ear pierced up at the top in the cartilage for years and I've never had any one look down on me for it to my knowledge. I know women in their 50's with piercings there as well. My mom wouldn't allow me to do it until I was 16 though.

I have my cartilege pierced twice, and I have never been turned down for a job. It's looked on as a "normal" ear piercing. And as someone else said, it's just a small hole, not permanent, so it can be taken out at crucial moments if you're not comfortable. Keep in mind that they take about a year to heal completely. I've had mine for 10 years and I'll never forget how rough it was to get them to heal.

My mom & dad said the exact same thing when I wanted my cartilage pierced. So on my 18th birthday, I went & got my nose pierced & also my tongue. I taught them! LOL and no its not unhealthy as long as you take care of it. More power to you!
