Our son sometimes wanders into our bedroom in the night to sleep with us. I have begining to notice bleached spots on pillowcases and blankets. Even on a bath towel he used. What could be causing this? Sweat?

Wow! I thought my kid was the only one that did that. We have come to the conclusion that it is from spit or drool when he is sleeping. Especially on colored items like pillow cases and so on. It actually ruined my flipping sofa cushions. He would fall asleep and where he would drool there would be a light/film like area. When I washed the item, there would be a stain. We started using white pillow cases now. The doctor said there is nothing to be alarmed about, checked him out and there is nothing wrong with him. So I have no idea what could be in the saliva that is actually causing it. Good luck and don't worry about it too much.

OK, maybe it's sweat. But it might be something else. Let me delve into this with a little research. Stay tuned. You're not using any acne preparation on him are you? Like benzagel or benzamycin or anything with benzoyl peroxide?

I'm back. I asked a colleague who deals with metabolic diseases and inborn errors of metabolism. She didn't recall any adverse condition whereby body fluids would bleach bed linen.

I assume that your son is developing normally, that he does not have an unusual appearance or an unusual body odor. Those could be clues to an abnormal condition.

Are you using a detergent with bleach? If so, are you rinsing your bed linen well? If there is residual detergent with bleach in the bed linen, your son's saliva or sweat could theoretically cause bleaching. However, with the oxygen bleaches in modern detergents, I think this is also unlikely.

Druel is spit which is acidic in nature and therefore will "bleach" colors from fabric! I don't think medically there's much you can do about it especially a small child. In adults possibly an acid inhibitor like Prilosec or something but I wouldn't be pumping my child full of drugs at such a young age.

Check to see if his ears are ok. It sounds like he may have some discharge from his ears and may have an ear infection. Check his temperture too and give him a lot of fluids. Your best bet is to take him in to be seen by your doctor.
