i'm gonna try to answer this even though i don't know proper terms. from the way i understand it ... the old law of the times was an eye for an eye sort of thing. if you killed a man you were put to death ect. it was meant to balance the scales of justice i guess. well when adam sinned, there was no way to balance the scales of justice because adam was perfect. since we are all children of adam, we are all imperfect, so a perfect man would have to be sacrificed to remove us from sin.
there is an old covenant (or set of rules) that explained how to live and eat, how to offer a sacrifice every time we sinned ect. that sort of thing. but when Christ died for our sins, there was written a new covenant. i have never heard of a scripture where jesus says that he didn't come to abolish old laws, but i'm interested in reading it. i have an open mind and try to make of the scriptures what i can. would you mind posting it?

Actually, the whoe idea behind Christianity and the NT, was just that Gentiles and Jews could have a belief in one God and his savior, Christ.
However, as to what to eat, hat is correct etc etc, there is no verse I recall that says, hey eat what you want etc etc. The purpose of the NT was to describe the life of Christ his teachings and his second coming...ALTHOUGH the NT gospels were written decades after the death of Christ.
The purpose of Christ was to preach love and salvation, he did not set out to negate the laws or make the Torah an out dated document. Christs death was meant as the ultimate act of forgiveness and by that, the necessity for rituals and cleansing pretty much is not required.
There are exceptions, most notable the 10 commandments which is still referred to as the Decca by the jewish faith.

Hi, I'm not Chistian, but I think I can point to what you want. Basically it's a NT (post-Jesus) idea, the most famous passage is Peter's vision found in Acts 10:9 and following. Where he saw a blanket full of animals (clean & unclean) and God himself told him: kill and eat, Peter... read it and you'll get the idea. Later Peter himself retells the story in chapter 11.

Go to the Acts of the Apostles chapter 10.. the whole chapter.. its about the conversion of Cornelius the Gentile and the vision Peter had on the roof terrace when he was praying.
That is when it all started. This chapter is from my New American Bible ..St Joseph Edition.

The New Testament was inaugurated in Jesus' Blood 2000 years ago.
There is an old testament with the laws and rules and all that.
The New Testament came.
You can have the old testament or the New Testament. Not both testament.
If the old testament was good, why did God bring in the new testament?
He did it by the way.
If you do not want Jesus to pay for your sins and you want to pay for them yourself.
Keep the Old testament.
If you want Jesus to pay for your sins so that you don't have to, keep the new testament.

If you read Apostle Paul's letter to the Galations especially chapter 3 it will explain this.
verse 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Apostle Paul taught we were not under the old laws such as circumsission or eating only clean animals for living by thr law doesnt save you. Believing in Christ does but that doesnt mean you can live like you want you must love Christ first then love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus says you will know my followers by their love. If I love my neighbor will I steal from him, kill him are do anything to hurt him... no

It is in the Gospels that Jesus says "it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, but what comes out of it"
also he says "the sabbath created for man, not man for the sabbath",
and he also referred to when king David and his men ate of the bread used for communion which was not supposed to be done.
I believe that what Jesus was trying to get at was this: We have certain rules which God gave us to help us, but it is not these rules that save us from sin and death.
