I very rarely got that problem with my Staffordshire bull terrier,as he is well behaved, I do get the odd look off people now and then, but I always make a point that he is not a problem. It's just bad press and the trigger is being pulled by anti pit bull brigade.

Staffy Bulls are lovely ( and have the most beautiful grin I've ever seen )
I have never ever heard of one attacking a person and I happen to live in Staffordshire so I get to see quite a lot of them !

All overly friendly dogs are greeted with suspicion by non-dog-owners, especially when they have small children - it's just a sign of the times I'm afraid.
I have a big sloppy GSD who loves people and expects everyone to love him when he's out. It's a shame to keep him on the lead but I believe it is for the best.

I can only respond from personal experience...I live in the West Mids (yeah I know, someone has to tho) and there are quite a lot of staffies, pits, bull terriers etc....I walk my dogs twice a day every day amassing to a total of 2and a half to 3 and a half hours per day....when the weather is awful...I only meet what I call serious dog owners, others might say we are totally bonkers and thats their right....Last weekend the weather was lovely here, I went out to be confronted by people out walkin their dogs for perhaps the first time this year...there were I admit various breeds but the majority were staffy owners...and the majority were big bald body builder types who seemed to find it amusing when I requested them to put their rather aggressive unsocialised un neutered dog on a lead as I had put my dogs on when approaching a dog they hadn't met before...the most common reply was 'whats your problem you;ve only got a spaniel he ain't gonna do no harm'....the owners give this breed a bad name

I've got a bullie and he is a sweet dog and funny as all get out, but the reputation of these dogs is very tarnished by the jerks that train them to fight. They are intelligent dogs that love to please. Your right about the greeting and I've been working with mine to try and end the jumping and excitement. It's tough but you have to be consistent and patient it doesn't happen over night. People will always react the way you describe because they are ignorant and don't know the breed only what they have heard on television which likes to sensationalize everything.

Im no xpert, bt i had a cross breed dog 4 19 years, he was ever so much like a staff, and wld never hav hurt any1, but was as strong as an ox. Your dog sounds luvly, i think it's definetly to do with how you bring them up. Any dog can turn, i think its a load of rubbish that Staffs r born killing machines. I know many people who have staffies and all they do is lick me to death, and also they have guarded over my children when they were tiny. If you teach a dog love, it definetly gets the message. You could try petting your dog a lot in public so that ignorant people can see just how friendly he/she is. Good luk * in changing small minded peoples minds !

A dog is only as dangerous as the person who owns and trains it.

If handled correctly a dog, trained with the right idea of what is right and wrong from an early age will never cause it's owner any hassle.
Terriers may be a little giddy and excitable, but they are in general friendly and loyal dogs, thats part of their personality, my Airedale Terrier is the same.

Staffs are friendly humerous characters who adore children,if raised right.Unfortunatly irresponsible owners buy them to boost there ego they think having a staff,or any other bull breed, makes them people not to cross. This is why so many people have the wrong idea of staffs and think there aggresive fighting machines.I have never met an aggresive staff,n i have worked in rescue centers, boarding kennels etc,a person down our local dog walking feild has a beuatiful example of a well socilised and trained staff. They are great pets if they are raised right.

As a vet nurse, I know staffies can be very friendly and over the top, and just want to be friends with everyone. On the other hand, staffies, as with any dog in fact, can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Yours seems very friendly and i think you are being responsible by not allowing it to go up to everyone, as some people and other dogs do not like other dogs approaching them. Ignore what other people do or say, as you are just being careful with him. You can, however, allow your dog to meet and greet other dogs in an appropriate area, such as a dog club or training class

My dog is the Same way. I have a pit bull, and she HAS to see Everyone! When we are out in public and she sees someone she pulls very hard at the leash to get to them. People get scared because she is a PIT BULL they think she is coming at them in a mean way, but she really just wants to be pet. What I do, if it is someone that likes dogs, I take her up to them slowly, and they Quickly realize she just wants a pat on the head. But some people don't even want me to do that. So I am going to try taking her to obedience classes to teach her to walk on a leash more nicely, and learn how to heal. It might be a good idea for your dog too, just so people don't judge your dog the wrong way. Good Luck!!

I have 4 Staffords, All of them love people, they are a very loving & loyal breed. The kennel club state that they are totally realiable with kids. The say that about only 2 breeds. If anyone has had bad experiences with them, the chances are they were badly bred , badly trained cross breeds. Try going to a dog show were you will find the true staffordshire bull terriers.

JUSME: WTF are you talking about??
there is the staffordshire bull terrier
the bull terrier
the american staffordshire terrier
