not really - at least not on the scale that they chose to wage the war..

and germany and japan knew that it was a long shot from the start.

germany is a landlocked nation that was surrounded by nations that it was at war with, except for switzerland. the deeper they got into the nations they invaded, the further they were from their supply bases.

from 1870 forward, if germany did not win a quick war like the franco-prussian was (which is the last war they ever won), they lost the protracted wars of attrition that they got into.

while germany had some natural resources, hitler's order that all ordnance be made from resources from within the reich meant that the munitions that krupp sold overseas were superior to the ones they produced for the german army, navy and air force.

one german phobia from ages past is the fear of encirclement - which had a lot to do with why they lost the war.

japan was in roughly the same boat with regards to resources. they had some, but as they stretched their fronts into the phillipines, china and indonesia, they got further and further from their home bases and supplies got harder and harder to come by.

they were also much more dependant on their air force and navy than germany was, and therefore could be more easily targetted.

both had quick strikes as their primary strategy, but it seems that there wasn't a great deal of thought beyond that.

it should be remembered that their quick strikes almost always worked - but when you make war on dozens of nations, they won't go away quickly and easily...

Not the axis powers, but Germany would have conquered all of Europe, with Italy's help. Since Hitler always intended to spread Nazi control to Russia, he probably would have repeated Napoleon's failure. Japan always intended to drive the U.S. out of the Pacific, so we would have defeated them anyway. I don't think Germany would have supported Japan any more than they did, because Hitler had no intent to occupy Asia and would have been content to deal with the United States as partners, especially after we refused to help the Jewish emigrants, as well.

If Japan didn't bomb pearl harbor. Americans would have just funded the Brits, they would not have gotten involved. Until Dec 7 1941 there was a very large anti-war/pacifist movement.

If the allied press was uncensored like it is today we would have lost. The people of America and Europe would oppose the war, like they did in Vietnam.
We need to apply this lesson to the wars of today. Censor reports coming from warzones and keep public opinion optimistic.

It was possible. All Hitler had to do was invade England. If he had kept up his bombing campaign and then invaded England, he would have controlled the entire Atlantic Ocean.
Openning the Russian front was the biggest brain-lock by a military in history.

It would have been if Germany would have been able to push through Russia and join up with Japan. For that matter if Japan had not drawn the U.S into WWII and had attacked Russia from the other front, we may have seen totally different results

Yep, if they had left the US alone until they'd defeated everyone else, then it very likely would have happened. They bit off more than they could chew on 7 Dec 41, and it choked 'em.

Absolutely.

Fact of the matter is, it took most of the industrialized countries of the world to gang up on them to beat them.
