i've never tanned before because i'm a red head and have fair skin. i tan better then most red heads though because i don't have the "normal" red head complexion. (no freckles my skin is a little darker but still pretty fair) one of my friends told me that it would be better for my skin if i went tanning before track started so that i wouldn't get fried my first day outside after being inside becuase of the winter coldness (i live in idaho) would it be better if i do tan before? and if i do decided to do it, how do i do it? i've never been before.

Redheads of the world unite!!

I'm the same way, except I have freckles. Use a tanning bed. (You can tan with a bikini on, or go naked. I myself hate tan lines.)Just be careful. Your first visit, stay 5-8 minutes. Use the same time frame for your first few visits, going every other day. After a week of this, gradually increase your time to 10-12 minutes. Do this for a few days, gradually increasing the time by a couple of minutes. After two weeks or so, you should be able to lay for the full 20 without frying anything important.

Trust me, I've fried my belly button, rear end, and several other VALUABLE body parts, if you know what I mean. THAT HURTS!!

Also, after you get your base tan, you can use a lotion that has an accelerator in it to make you tan faster, Probably when you start your 20 minute sessions. Have fun!!

you won't get 'fried' if you keep your skin protected... ie: sunscreen!!! spray tan's DO NOT protect your skin from the sun (fyi...) ... If you MUST go to a tanning salon - you should not take more then 5 mins max (depending on the strength of the bed or booth, some you stand some you lay in) the owner of the salon should better able to determine what would work for you - BUT... YOU MUST REALIZE tanning salons are not safer than the natural sun and you can burn and you WILL have permanent skin damage - you may not see it right away - but you will see it when you get older... lastly, in order for someone like yourself to get a 'base' tan to 'protect' you from frying you'll need to go about 8 times (at least) and keep it up - it will fade just like a 'regular' suntan...

Personally I don't think you build resistance by pre-tanning. During track you have to avoid being in the sun too much. Stay under cover as much as possible- and wear something light to cover up. A little bit of taning is ok but in general too much sunlight radiation is not good for you.

So avoid pre-cooking- and avoid being cooked too.

Ask if they have any tanning beds with "browning rays" that do not have the harmful uv rays that your average bed has. You'll still get used to the heat and your skin will be prepped for track, but you have less risk of cancer with browning rays.

All you have to do is go outside on a warm and sunny day and catch some sun, then put on some spf-10 or so suntan lotion your first few days at track and you should be fine.

Definately tan in advance. Just go in and set up your session, they will assign you a bed and then you just go in, get naked, use the towel to cover any parts you might not want to get a ton of exposure and enjoy.
