You know, there is probably some sort of Protestant connection to what people mean by that term, but I think that it is too genralized to be accurate. The term will probably mean different things to different people.

To me, American Christianity is referring to the Fundamentalist movement. I am not one of those.

It's characterised by a kind of extreme puritanical zeal and belief in the literal interpretation of scripture. I live in the UK where Christians are normal members of the community so American evangelicals and their attitude are totally alien to me.
