Ask the mailman to help you work with the dog. Then train the dog using positive methods to sit and get a treat from the mailman. If your mail man just drives past the house and leaves the mail at the curb, then you'll have to do all the work yourself and that means being home consistently. You need to anticipate the arrival of the mailman and distract and consistently reward the dog for not barking.

My sister-in-law rescued a Chihuahua mix about two years ago. He would bark at nothing and the mail man all the time. To fix the problem, she was told that everytime the dog barks when it is not appropriate, take a spray bottle and squirt the dog. Don't adjust the nozzle to spray or else the dog won't get the idea if a light mist is coming down on him, but make the nozzle to were a higher pressured stream will shoot out at the dog and get his attention. Firmly tell him "no" after you squirt him. Upon spraying the dog, hide the bottle behind your back so he doesnt see it or else he'll be frightened of spray bottles. He will eventually get the point and know that it's not okay to bark when the mail man comes. I know it's kind of weird, but if the mail man doesn't have time to get to know your dog and since bark collars will teach him to not want to bark at all, this may work. Good luck!

Time to put the dog on the leash and training collar....when the mailman arrives we react calmy making the dog sit or down stay. Do not move toward the door or acknowledge the noise at the door as the mail man delivers the mail. Once the mail is delivered move the dog over to the side make him do a Sit stay why you get the mail from the mail box. when it is recovered and he does well then praise and let the dog go. and wait til the next day and repeat until he succeeds with out having to be put on leash. It takes 13 days to create a habit....usually. and if your are consistant.

Yes, the "NO bottle" gets a lot of use around here. Just a squirt in the face every time he barks for no reason, will soon get the idea across.

try the shock collars. Give the dog a bit of a shock every time he barks at the mail man. This works.
