Introducing it in as painful a way as possible. It shouldn't be a matter of indoctrination, it should be about teaching about all faiths and all schools of thought and allowing them to explore. Spirituality should also be connected to regular life, so that the relationship can be seen and thus have it better grounded in their minds.

Why not just leave the 'youngsters' alone until they're mature enough to bring themselves into whatever circles they choose?

By oneself following spirituality and showing by one's own example since example is better than precept.
This is the reason why five hundred years ago, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa(renounced order of life) at the age of twenty four.
He was teaching his young students logic, grammar etc. . . and defeating various erudite scholars the famous being that of defeating Keshava Kashmiri on the bank of Ganga in Mayapura. But, after meeting his guru Isvara Puri, he realized the futility of dry logic etc. . . and came to know that worshiping Krishna is the topmost and wanted to share the same teachings to his students.
Some of the young students misunderstood thinking that he being a householder cannot impart perfect teachings, while most of them accepted his teachings. Therefore, in order to benefit the young students, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took to the renounced order of life and the students respected him because of that and received his teachings wholeheartedly.
It is to be noted that in Vedic tradition, a sannyasi respected for his renunciation and thus Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu took to the renounced order of life just to benefit his young students who would show him respects and accept his teachings for their benefit.
Though he had a very affectionate mother and a beautiful young wife he gave them up, though it is very difficult to give up. But he did give them up in order to benefit the young students as well as others and in fact everybody was benefited by that.
