My two primary school daughters are going on dinners on monday. It has just cost me £16.50. Is it going to be worth £8.25 per child? Are dinners really better? I am obviously hoping so!

i think you should be asking your daughters what they want. if this is the first of them having dinners then do it for a week or two to see how they get on. Personally i givemy daughter a packed lunch so i know exactly whats she has or hasnt ate as she brings empty sandwiches bag back with her in her box. Another reason is she doesnt eat anything with sauce like bologneise or gravy or weven tomato ketchup. She did try dinners once but didnt like it and come home starving. im not really worried because she prefers healthy food to junk and know shes getting a balanced diet.if your daughters have asked for dinners it might be because all their friends have them. just give iot a try and let them decidebut makesure they know if you spend goodmoney on a dinner then they will be eating it or going hungry.

School dinners give a well rounded meal. If you provide a healthy piece of fruit, whole wheat bread, and everything to provide a balanced meal, there's nothing wrong with a sandwich. If your kids are as picky as mine, they may not eat the whole meal provided by the school anyway and miss out on the advantage of a well rounded meal. You know the schools don't usually cook like we would at home. Use your own judgment based on their eating habits and what type of breakfast and dinner is served at home. If they get very healthy meals at home, they can splurge and have a healthy but fun lunch at school.

no sandwiches are better no matter how appetising school dinners might look they are full of calories and sugar and additives if you sat down and worked out the cost of making two packed lunches i don't think it would come to that amount at least packing your children's lunchboxes you can choose what they have in there and make it balanced and healthy most schools have chips on the menu everyday and pizza which kids go for nice but not healthy i would go with a packed lunch

It depends on how fussy your children are when it comes to eating. One obvious advantage to paying for school dinners is that you haven't got the hassle of making sandwiches in the morning. I would give it a month or so to test the water and pay for the dinners. If they are not coming home complaining, then keep it going!

My daughter alternates it if she don't like the dinner on offer she takes sandwiches, at least you can see how much they're eating.
She came home today and said she only got a small portion cos there were'nt much left, so I'm paying £8.00 a week for hardly anything. I'd rather she takes sandwiches, then I know how much she's getting

School dinner is better, I think. But at my child's school most of the children wanted packed lunch because they can finish this quickly then go out and play!

I can't believe this, the children voted leisure over nutritious hot meals!

I worked for a very short time in a school cafeteria, and saw tray after tray of food being thrown away. I decided at that time to have my children always take their lunches. I may pay a little extra doing it this way, but at least I know they are eating.

I would say home packed lunches are better. You can still give them a variety during the week, but at least you are controling what they eat, and how much. Give your children healthy lunches, fruits, veggies, and you can even buy a thermos and give them a hot lunch yourself, some soup, whatever. Its cheaper, and just as healthy.

Well, many mums make their child's lunch. Maybe it would be fun if you took them grocery shopping and picked out good stuff they like to eat. Then you'll know what they're eating and that it's healthy, and it's cheaper then how the school provides it.
One part protein, one part carboheidrate, one part fruit, and one part veggie: you can't go wrong.
Anyway, long and short of it: sandwich/ home-made lunch is best!
