I have heard similar things as well. Hell is not a doctrine. Many people differ as to what hell is and even if it exists at all and some misquided people think the "church" made it up. It is my understanding that they are referring to the "church" of the Roman Empire during Constantine's reign and not of the Catholic church of today. If you want to learn more about what happened in the first 6 to 7 hundred years of the Christian church...I would start there. There is reason to believe that some of what happened should not have, but...as with all these things, there really is no absolute proof that any person, christian or ruler made up doctrines.

Every religion has its doctrine of hell.
Hinduism does. Judaism does. Buddhism does. Christianity does. Islam does.
Some sects of Christianity define hell as simply the grave {Seventh Day Adventists, and also
Jehovah's Witnesses-[which broke away from Seventh Day Adventists, to start their own church].
Some view hell on different planes of existence, and its only a temporary place. Once one's Kamma, which put them there has expired, they are released and are reborn on another plane of existence - Buddhism.
Most of Christianity, and Islam and Judaism believes hell, according to their scriptures, to be a place which one goes for eternity.
But the concept of hell did not originate with the Catholic Church, it has existed since the world's first religion: Hinduism; but the way humanity defines hell, has changed through the times, with each and every religion.
Hope this helps some.

In the beginning God made the heavens and the earth and a list of all things he did. Hell was not listed and then he rest. From here we change the Bible to suit ourselves. Some say he is still in rest, if so he never made Hell and it will be made later such as in the day of Judgment when he starts back to work. The term was never used until Jesus spoke of it ??? with Moses talking to the burning bush of our rules of life(The 10 Commandments) that would have been a good time to say the punishment of breaking these rules would be a trip to hell ??? When Jesus spoke of Hell it was not Hell but the burning trash pit outside of town and in later days Lucifer the fallen angel from the right hand of God who is know the Devil will be bound to earth ??? If he is the ruler of Hell ??? why isn t he in Hell ??? Or is he waiting for it to be made ? .

Hell is one of those subjects that makes people uncomfortable. We hear stories of hell being a place of fire, demons, and endless torment. Throughout history many authors have written about it, Dante's Inferno for example. Western culture is very familiar with the concept. Even Hollywood has made it the subject of many movies. Whatever the context, whatever the belief, hell is definitely taught in the Bible. But even the doctrine of hell is not without its controversy. Some say it is only the grave with no consciousness. Others say it is a place of correction and punishment that is not eternal. Others say it is an endless agonizing punishment in fire. Whichever it is, hell is the total absence of the favor of God.

Luke 16:20 "And a certain poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores,
Luke 16:21 and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores.
Luke 16:22 "Now it came about that the poor man died and he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.
Luke 16:23 "And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw^ Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke 16:24 "And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.'
These are the words of Jesus Christ.

Jesus taught about it. Anyone who says different is either ignorant, or misinformed.
Please see:
Matthew 5:22, 11:23.
Mark 9:47.
Luke 10:15, 16:23.

Read the book "Conversations with God" by Neale Donald Walsh. You dont have to be religious and it doesnt preach it either but it has a fabulous take on how Hell came to be in our culture and it does link it with catholisism.
