my 14yr old stepson doesnt get pocket money as such.he does chores during the week and if his friends are going swimming or cinema, ifs hes done his chores and kept his room tidy for the whole week he can go. when i was younger (not that long ago, im 24) i got £5 and for that had to keep my room clean and tidy and walk our dog everyday after school. any extra i wanted i had to earn by doing chores and helping my mum with ironing. pocket money isnt a right, its a luxury, be grateful you get what you get. do you actually do anything to earn that or is it just given to you?

Don't know what planet Kieron's on but I'm English and have worked from the age of 13! I reckon getting a fiver for doing nothing is a right result.

In my day I got 50p a day (to include the bus fare and dinner money) to buy any 'luxuries' I had to get a part time job.
I did me no harm and actually made me realise the importance of money and how hard it was to come by, but easy to spend.
Also and more importantly it helped me to be determined and earn more - I am well off now - thanks to my parents.

Sow up all of your pockets, you wont need any pocket money then. When I was your age I was happy to get 50p but I didnt need any pockets I would spend it on sweets straight away.

Id do extra before Id start asking for extra. If my kids pick up more responsibility than they are expected to every week, then they deserve more. My mother always said...put a hand in instead of a hand out!

If mum cant afford it £10 might seem alot, so offer to lighten her load by doing extra housework and she will feel its worth it. My 9 year old gets £3 so I suppose at 14 £10 is reasonable.

I used to get £5 a week until I was 16. Then I had to get a job. That was eight years ago.

your lucky, i used to get £1 off my nan every week, this was only 5yr ago ....... any other money i got, i had to do chores for, washing up, wiping up, hoovering, dust my room etc, see if you can make this deal with your parents, otherwise, get up and get a paper-round or something, you dont get something for nothing in this world, the sooner you learn that the better!!

I guess it all depends on what your parents can afford. There's not a national rate that parents should be giving children.
