The USDA/FDA generally provides general food guidelines for production. When people become ill, the FDA's job is to find where the contamination occurred, to what extent and advise on a course of action. They are like the CSI of the food safety world.

In regards to the FDA doing something for those affected?
I'm not sure they do anything... such as provide medical benefits, compensation or any type of personal assistance, since the FDA did not make the peanut butter.

Nothing. The Peter Pan people had it pulled and are praying nobody dies. There have been several outbreaks this year which is resulting in a crack-down by the FDA. The FDA only sets guidelines as a form of prevention. The aftermath is up to the individual and the food manufacture.

My roommate has two jars of 2111 P-butter. I printed off a news article for him and pulled the jars out of our food rotation. He put them back saying "I only ate half that jar." *wHaT?*

Nothing. The FDA bears no legal responsibility to compensate anyone affected.

Those that were affected and can provide evidence can file suit against the company. A class action suit is possible, although consumers will likely end up with nothing more than a coupon.

Unless you have high medical bills, it's best to move on with life. The trouble and expense of legal action could ruin you before you get a win.
