I was in the golf business - playing and teaching for many years and I want to tell you that you can't buy your game. You can buy say new Ping or Callaway irons and you will probably hit them further. However, it is not the irons, it's the loft. King Cobra was the first to do it 8-10 years ago. People would say I can hit this 8 iron 15 yard further that my 8 iron. This was true, but it was because the loft was that of a 7 or 6 iron. Do yourself a favor and get some forgiving perimeter weighted clubs and go get a lesson from a local PGA teaching professional. Most importantly, go and practice. 70% of the game is 100 yards and in. Spend 50% of your time putting and another 30% on short game and wedge play. If you have anything left go bang away on the driver and irons and don't worry about how far it goes - just dance with the partner you brought that day.

Clubs are generally not the issue when it comes to distance, especially with irons. Unless you are playing with severely old clubs, and even then it's the swing that matters most. Distance is created by clubhead speed. Try using a swing fan (http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/stores/1/product1.aspx?Product_ID=2746&) to develop your golf muscles. (I'm sure you can find one cheaper, but this was the first site that I saw) The added resistance will help you to swing the club faster when you switch back to your real club. But if your swing doesn't get the ball airborn or heading straight, I would recommend getting a lesson to fix that. A slice or a hook can take anywhere from 5-30+ yards off a shot.

In my coaching of people from all walks of life in golf, I would have a qualified teaching pro analyze your swing possibly with video. This way you will know if it is just better technique on your part that will give you more distance. Many amateurs do not execute the proper weight shift on the downswing. Try that. I knew of one person that was playing with outdated clubs as well. He was playing with clubs from when Tom Watson beat Jack Nicklaus at the British Open in the 70s.

If you go to a store just remember their goal is to sell you what ever they can. A lot of workers in the stores are not teaching professionals so be careful. As far as what to buy try having your current clubs(if you like them) re shafted with an extra one half to one inch in length. Changing length will increase your club head speed for each club which will result in more distance.

Have you considered a hybrid (i.e utility or rescue club)?

Compared to the same long iron, a hybrid is:
- easier to hit because the head has more mass and a lower center of gravity
- will make the ball go higher, carry further and land softer
- better out of sand and bad lies

Check out the link below for a little more info. I have added 2 utility clubs to my bag and my game has significantly improved.

Good Luck!

Replace your 3 and 4, maybe even 5 irons with hybrids. They are easier to hit, go a little farther, and go higher.

For irons, get the Cobra S9 irons. They are the best Super-Game-Improvement irons right now accordiing to the Golf Digest Hot List.

Go to a local golf store (ie. Golf Discount, Golf Galaxy). And they can make sure that you have the right fundamentals and they will fit you and tell you which clubs can help improve your game.
Hope this helps!

Try a lesson with a pro. Clubs are not as important as technique.
