These meds you are talking about do lose it's ability to work; you sort of get immune to it.I've been on Xanax for over 10 years, give or take(got severe anxiety/panic attacks.I'm sure if you can remember when you first started they worked beautifuly, hmm? That is why some people start taking more and more on their own.But the withdrawals are VERY bad.
Anyway Ativan should help you;once you finished with the Xanax.Another good one is called Klonopin---It stays in your system longer than either of the others. But they are all Benzos. All from the same family.I really wish you the best.'cause I've ben there, you know.Bye bye.

After 17 years I would think it's lost it's effectiveness. Your community should have a community mental health clinic who should have therapists and a psychiatrist on staff. Meanwhile if the dr gave you ativan to try ,do it. AS directed. If you have not been properly weaned off Xanax don't take yourself off. But talk to whoever prescribed the Ativan and mAKE sure they know your entire history of current medications.

I always thought xanax and ativan was the same thing??One was just alittle stronger than the other.I was complaining a while back about being dizzy .I told my phyc doctor about it and he did ask me if I had been having trouble with my ear,And sure enough my left ear was clogged.I couldnt hear out of it.So, yeah I would think your dizzyness is coming from your ear.Just to be sure I would ask your dr. Because having a low blood pressure can make you dizzy to.

If you have been taking xanax for 17 years whatever you do, do not stop taking it, tell your doctor first. Withdral from benzodiazapines can be fatal. Tell a doctor your symptoms and let them ween you off of the xanax and start with something else. Again, whatever you do, do not suddenly stop taking it.

xanax does eventually stop working because your body builds a tolerance to it. This is common for most of the anxiolytics. The ativan will likely help, and there are other meds out there that do the same thing.
