When I was 16 I was very aggressive and always got into fights. I joined a Kung-Fu club for 2 years, became alot stronger and more capable of fighting or defending my self than I ever was (don't worry I haven't had the time to train for at least 5 years and doubt I could lift my leg above my knee) - but I also stopped getting into fights, became more confident, less aggressive and I would even say more sensitive.

Sensitive in the way that I was more able to sum some people up, if they can look after themselves, if they were looking for trouble or not. No super powers - just a bit more common sense.

I think that what you are asking about is what the Japanese Koryu styles would refer to as Zanshin: the awareness of your surroundings and the ability to predict the actions of your opponent.

There are a lot of different views on this, and it is all experiential and subjective based on the practitioner, the style and the authenticity of the art.

There is no short yes or no answer, it depends upon all of the above as well as several other aspects which would take too much space to explore in enough detail to avoid confusion....

However, any martial art gives the individual a greater awareness of his or her own body, the strengths and weaknesses, the position of the body within the 4 dimensions. It can lead to some very supernatural seeming abilities where the martial artist seems able to intuit the next course of action of his opponent, and yes it can spill over into everyday life depending upon the style/person & etc.

As I said, there isn't a simple answer to this, but speaking from personal experience as a multiple style veteran of 23 years with 2 4th degree black belts as well as other yudansha grades below my belt....yes.

If you are interested in further reading there is an excellent essay (several in fact) that I would recommend reading in Koryu Bujutsu (edited by Diane Skoss):

Or any of the books written by Donn F. Draeger.

Hi there

To be able to be more sensitive you have to train very softly and slowly. The key to this is to be able to feel changes in your attackers balance and be able to sense his movements he makes taking full advantage of this. The more points of contact you have with your attacker the better so don't just rely on using your hands feel through your feet. Ki or Chi on its own is not enough. This is a very hard concept for some people to grasp especially martial artists that study a hard striking art. I do believe that in order to be able to appreciate this you must first train in a hard style.

Without contact with your attacker then your sensitivity is down to your own senses which are only built up from experience. Some people call this a six sense but its not a magical experience its just awareness.

Hope this helps / makes sense? ;)

As you study in Martial Arts you become more aware of yourself and how deal with situations and people the right way. You have become more disipline in mind and body, so you are more at ease in life.

You will find there is an aire about people whom study Marital Arts, they seem more confident, poised, and unfluttered by most situations that may come their way. This is because they will know how to deal with any siuation that comes.

I would say that I have more empathy to the peope who I meet in the class; another advantage would be that I am less frightened by the bullies that we have probably all met in the street and so less angry about being scared by them so everyone benefits from that. Wish I had started studying martial arts earlier in my life

I wouldn't necessarily call it sensativity.

I think that a person who is a normal person, and not a thug, but not a pushover.

Will realize how much they can actually hurt a person, and will be less likely to get into a conflict situation to "prove themselves" as they have been fighting skilled opponents who know how to fight (or should be) and are not just some drunken lush in a bar trying to prove themselves.

I am not sure if I have become more intuitive but I would say that I am more reactive in as much that I do not have to think to much about what I do from a physical perspective and am able to read other people's physical signs more readily.

all i can say is that if you study any martial arts the first thing you learn is to obey instructions and the more you study martial arts you learn how to FOCUS and learn how to breath properly and last to apply the skill you learn
so every thing you learn developed your personality ,,your character,,,your well being and your out look in life
and once you are aware of your self and sorrounding
you tends to be more sensitive,,you notice things that you didnt notice before,,,your aware with your environment and its changes and this makes you sensitive

For the past 3 years I have suffered daily with neuropathy. Well it’s been just 1 week and I just cannot put into words how brilliant my results have been. I have absolutely no more hyper sensitivity and no more agonizing burning pains. I can’t explain it, but this thing works. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing your secret with me.
