Ki, chi, or prana is a general term for subtle energy. It is called subtle as it is not directly aparent, much like x-rays or microwaves. The best way to understand Ki is to first understand oneself. You first have the body. Then one has the thoughts, the feelings, the ideas, and the dreams. These are ki and can be said to be ones spirit.More specifically, there are different types of ki, much like there are different types of ideas. There has been made menion of Air or prana a lot in Hindu/buddhist thought for example. And here we have the error, for you see, your body is not your spirit, nor is your spirit your body, yet both are you and both are bound. The same is also true for prana and air. Neither are each other yet both are bound and entwined. That is how it is possible to breathe air without breathing prana, and why the buddha teaches proper breathing.

Theoretically everyone has KI. Everyone can use it because, it is simply your energy. Can someone have strong enough KI to push someone away by thought alone? More than likely...No. I have never seen that happen nor have I heard about it from an credible source.
Mostly you will see examples of KI used in things you may not have realized before. A super talented football player who seems to be easily knocking other players off of their feet, may be harnessing his KI. A baseball player that hits home runs with the greatest of ease, may be harnessing his KI.
I have seen a documentary on Shao-Lin Monks that showed them meditating in the cold weather, high in the mountains and the meditation raised their internal temp enough to make steam rise off of their bodies in the cold air. The monks were wearing only the traditional orange robes and nothing else. The heat was also captured with heat sensing cameras. This is an excellent example of harnessing KI.
I believe we can all use our KI. You may have seen it or used it, but not recognized it. The next time you are training and doing a punch technique, imagine in your minds eye that the fist is already at the target before you even throw it. Imagine that all you have to do is move and bam...it's there. Practice this a lot and I believe you will start to realize what this is and what it can be.

the problem with "KI" or "chi" is that there is no uniform definition.
It has become a term that is usually followed by a fraudulent and ludicrus statement. So legitimate martial artists often roll thier eyes and brace themselves for the bullshido to come.
Generally without going into EVERY definition of it, there are two ways people use the term.
1- the legit way.
This is when it is used to describe legitimate things that can be tested and aren't associated wtih people who have "helpers" that jump around and "push themselves". This type of definition includes things like adrenalin, power, technique, structure, increased blood flow (which leads to improvement in health)- here saying "cigarettes and trans fat are bad for your chi" is correct, as they do impact your arteries in the long term.
2- Fake or "magic" chi.
this is the catchall for such outlandish claims like yellow bamboo or george dillman (amusing videos below) who claim that they can use chi like luke skywalker uses the force. To strike objects without touching them or move matter with your mind, or make an "impenetrable force field". This type of chi is pure bullshido often it only "works" because the person bieng thrown is a compliant partner.

Personally I don't think it is anything except a term used to describe a number of different concepts, some of which are legitimate, others are not.
Like the term "s hit". I can use it to say:
I have to take a "s hit" or
I have to go pick up my s hit from the gym.
or
S hit! I left my wallet at the club a baby seal rally.
or
this is a "s hitty" day.

Hi there
Yes Ki or Chi can be developed but you cant perform amazing magical feats with it that's just TV. Think of Chi as a way of directing all of your bodies energy to one point. There are quite a few ways to develop it. Breathing correctly when performing techniques is the most practical and realistic way whilst trying to direct all your energy to one point. Some people prefer to meditate to help them develop this kind of skill. None of the above is a mystique or magical skill. Even people that doubt it exists such as boxers will have done the above without being aware of it. Ki can also be a form of using your voice to direct your energy. It's not just shouting at your attacker. There are up to 4 or 5 different kinds of vocal Ki and the conventional karate ki is just one of them. Its all about focus and feeling that can help improve yourself and your technique. People shouldn't dismiss it just because they don't fully understand it. Remember we didn't believe a man would be able to fly and that was soon proved to be wrong.

Idai

Ki is your inner life force. Directly translated it means life breath. You use Ki as a source of energy to improve your natural abilities. This is a very old idea that still works, but it's not magical and it doesn't make you into a super human. By controlling your breathing you can optimize your bodies reactions and movements. For an example, sharply exhaling while striking gets your body in the idea of releasing energy, so your strike is just a little more forceful. Notice I said little. It won't make you smash through walls, or fly or push people with your mind or anything.
Some folks called Kiai masters claim they can use their voice as a weapon in itself. It has yet to be proven but the theory is that by yelling very loudly and using Ki you can shock a person into freezing up in panic or confusion. This will give you then an added second or two in which to strike. One such master can supposedly ring a bell from across the room with his Kiai.

This is a tricky one, and something I spent a period of time in the past looking into. The only thing I can say is that when I was doing alot of taichi, meditation, reiki and accupuncture I used to feel unusual sensations in my hands(other parts too, but generally arms and hands) that I had never experienced before. It was kind of like I developed the ability to direct blood flow into areas I was concentrating on ie hands (chi and blood are meant to be linked). On quite a few occasions I was concentrating on my hands and fingers and they became engorged with blood to an extent where I was unable to close my hands into a fist-I was not doing any activity at the time.
I was also attacked once, and managed to defend myself in a way that I have no idea how I did it. This was during the time I was doing alot of activities that involved chi. Whilst im sure alot of people have experienced this utilising adrenalin etc, it felt very 'different', and was very surprising to both myself and my attacker. One minute he was standing up coming towards me in an aggressive manner, and the next he was on his **** and I was standing over the top of him. The speed, and ease that he was 'subdued' resulted in him being quite frightened....whether this was chi, or something else, who knows, all I can say is that it felt like a completly different thing??? Who knows. My advice would be have some accupuncture and reiki done to you, and try out some taichi, and see what you experience.

Ki (usually spelled chi or qi) is internal life force.
It is the internal energy flow that is associated with acupuncture and other principles of Chinese medicine.
Most applications have to do with redistributing it within your own body.
Using it against another person usually involves physical contact.
Looking at it from a scientific viewpoint, this is probably because the strength/power/intensity of energy decreases with the square of the distance.
This is most readily seen when studying light, gravity, magnetism and energy transmission (such as undirected radio.)

Ki is your internal energy. It is impossible to really define. A lot of people can utlilize their Ki to some extent. Very very few can focus their Ki enough to push people away without touching them.

i have learnt to blend ki by doing taichi and playing with my dog. What it means is i can feel what he is doing and going to do, and respond gently like i am dancing with him. It is so much like dancing that i am sure a lot of dancers blend ki without knowing about it.
Everyone who does wing chun develops enough ki to do a gentle strike, and the energy pushes the person away. They learn this in only a year or so. I haven't studied it though.
