We have two cats and one litterbox. Yeah, yeah, we should have more, but we did for a little while and the second one was largely ignored.

We switched litters a little while ago. King Fussypants didn't like it, and took to dropping loads outside of the box. Not always, but most of the time. Curiously, right next to the box, and he'd still try to bury it a bit. Quite a mess.

We finally got a box of the old litter last night, but before we could switch back (and we are worried that's going to cause a new fuss), he took a pee right outside the box -- on quite the little pile of litter, bizarrely.

If he just doesn't like the new litter, why'd he bother to (fairly) neatly make a pile of it outside the box to pee on? I'm amazed...

(Our other cat hasn't made a single complaint about any litter we've used. They are both "fixed.")

At www.littlebigcat.com Dr. Jean Hovfe has four articles on litterbox behavior in her free article library. Why don't you read all of them to see if you can come up with a solution for your cats.

I don't have these issues with my cats and have not read the articles. I am sure she will say that your cat may need a urinalysis at the vet's to determine if he has pain and discomfort in urinating and that she will also say - litterbox # of cats + one. You are already aware of those possibilities and I am sure there are other suggestions in the articles for you to consider.

You could try a litter box with a lid on it so that he couldn't do this by accident. Also keep the litter off the floor, my cat did this for a while and it was only when there was litter on the floor. And clean the inside of the box with soap and water every once in a while because even if the litter is fresh, if it the box itself smells they don't like to use it.

Hmmm.....Does he think the area around his litter box smells like the place to pee or poo? Does the litter box have a lid? I had to change to a different kind of litter box because I noticed pee around the box. It seems my cat doesn't squat as low as other cats and so she pees more on the side of her litter box and it would drip out between the lid and bottom. Could that be it?

when you want to switch litters, mix a little bit at a time in the current litter, that way your cat will get use to it. Cats don't like abrupt change.

I think King Fussypants has spoken.

How could you?

Get him what he likes. He told you what he thought of the litter and what it does to his paws.

Having 3 cats myself I completely understand, but if your kitty isn't happy your not happy. It will always get worse they will always win.
