My mom used to do this to me. I have really straight hair that is hard to curl. I don't like kinky hair so she would put my hair in braids while it was wet and the next day when I took them out, my hair was curly. You can change the size of the curls by changing the size of the braids.

Skip the curling iron. The night before, french braid your WET hair. If you want smaller waves, braid your hair into 3 different sections of more.

To avoid the 'straight' awkward end from tying the braid off, when you wrap the hair elastic around the end, let it wind all the way to the tips of the hair so it looks like its weaved or criscrossed on the ends. It'll kind of have that 'Native American' braid, where it's wrapped. If you do it tight enough ( you may have to use 2 or 3 bands) the hair will look as kinky as the rest.

Before bed take a shower and braid your hair 4 or 5 braids should be fine, then sleep in it when you wake up take it out flip your hair upsidown fluff for a bit and spray some hair spray. You will have wavy.

In addition to scrunching the hair while drying it (**and please be careful not to burn yourself), how about using a diffuser attachment. I use one with what looks like 'fingers' as opposed to the ones with just a flat side if you can picture what I mean ;) Scrunching to get waves works better if the person has layers if even long layers. I twirl my hair around my finger as if someone is saying that the other is 'weird' but not to be done when actually thinking that someone is weird, lol. Hopefully that can help put some wave into your hair.

You can try scrunching it. For example, start with damp hair and put in some gel in your hair. Then scrunch the hair with your hand as you dry. If you want your hair more hard or wet looking put more gel in it, but if you don't want it to, use less. Spray some hairspray afterwords.

If you "have the patience of Job", I don't, do what my mother did years ago: They took EACH strand of their hair and, while wet, twirled it around their finger. They then bobby pinned it to their head and let it dry. Instant waves for awhile. Good luck!
