Neurofibromatosis is a genetically inherited disease with wide variability in expression. Some affected individuals may only have a few café au lait (coffee with cream) colored spots while others on the opposite spectrum may have large tumors under the skin and throughout the body. The brain and nerves can be affected.

It sounds as though your doctor didn't explain it very thoroughly or you were in a state of shock and too upset to digest the information. Perhaps another visit is in order. Also, since it is a very complex disorder, there are neurofibromatosis clinics in many large medical centers. The more severely affected children are examined by geneticists/pediatricians, ophthalmologists, orthopedic specialists, neurologists, etc. Your doctor should be able to direct you to one.
