Petfinder.com has many dogs in the New York City area. They advertise different shelters and dogs. You can get to the individual sites through Petfinder.com
Good luck...dogs that are adopted from a shelter are the best.

Petfinder.com has listings of lots of shelters in and around NYC. The north shore animal league is something to look into as well.

You can adopt out of state. i live in West Virginia and we have a shelter here, but there are also rescues that you can adopt from or have one adopted from another state and they can bring the adopted dog to you were you live. just do a search

If you are looking for a specific breed go to www.akc.org and click on the rescue group page and they can tell you all the rescue centers for all the different breeds of dogs in you area.
