just start by purchasing the items you really need, then keep saving for the rest & buy gradually... shopping at yard sales & thrift stores (salvation army, goodwill) is a good way especially if you get creative. If you go to barnes & noble, they have books w/ all kind of ideas to re-furbish furniture. I've done this many times, and, those are actually the things I get the most compliments on when people come to my home- they'd never guess where it came from!

Find furniture consignment stores in your area. They are fantastic. Owners are usually very picky about what they will take, and the merchandise usually only stays on the floor around 30 days or so. You can find used furniture that looks brand new, and some of the best brands, like Ethan Allen, Bernhardt, Pulaski, etc. Add slowly. Don't get stuff just to take up space or you'll regret it. You'll be amazed at the prices. If you have to save a bit, then so be it. You'll be happier in the long run. Craigslist.org is good for the appliances. You can try yard sales and Good Will for dishes, towels, etc.

Try Craig'sList.org or Freecycle.org. They always have stuff that people are either selling cheap or giving away (including fridges and stoves and washers and dryers).
Another two things that cash-strapped college age kids are always doing - they cruise around in neighborhoods where college kids rent and look to see what students who are moving out on the last day of classes abandon at the curb. It is often usable stuff that they just can't take along to their next place. The other thing is that on "bulk trash pickup day" each week in upscale neighborhoods there are always a lot of great things that people have upgraded from. If you have the use of a truck or an SUV you can get a house-load of pricey stuff in acceptable conditon. Even if you had to rent a Uhaul from Home Depot for $20 you would come out ahead on that scavenging.

If you have Goodwill Industries or a Salvation Army in your area, I'd start there. You can find a lot of household furnishings at your local yard & garage sales too. I also know that many household furnishings can be purchased at Dollar General, Family Dollar, & the Dollar Tree. Shopping for dishes, tableware, towels, cleaning products, paper products, etc. are very inexpensive, & it's a start. Worry about three rooms right now. The kitchen, bathroom, & living room. Hopefully, someone will have a "housewarming" party for you. Good luck!

I have a great idea! I moved last summer in a much larger condo from a 1 br small apartment....and had to purchase furniture for a sunroom; breakfast room; dining room; outfit a 2nd bathroom; and furnish another bedroom.
My daughter suggested www.craigslist.org
I found WONDERFUL buys! My dining room set is top of the line and I only spent $200 for it....My kitchen set [solid wood with upholstered wood chairs] was $75...as an example.
I also bought twin beds for $50...in great condition.
Most furniture ads come with pics
You can also get great buys on home accesories, linens, dishes, pots and pans, silverware - appliances.
Note: craigslist 'moves' quickly - new ads are placed every few minutes so even if you don't see what you want at first glance keep looking....SO many people just tire of trying to get top price for used household stuff and practically give it away there.
There is also a 'free' category where I got my computer desk - solid wood in great shape
Have fun! and Congrats on your new home :-)

I know the feelling! House rich-cash poor! Its ok to live in your big empty house for a while. Soon you will get back to where you can buy what you really want. You may pick up some freebies from friends and relatives in the mean time. I would say don't spend money on something you don't reall want.

if you were getting MARRIED before keeping house then someone would give you a shower to get those things as gifts. When people put the cart before the horse they lose out. Sorry to sound judgemental but facts are facts.
