I have read it twice, and I am an athiest. I agree that parts of it are very loving and full of sacrafice. The beaitudes, for instance, are great words of encuoragement for the down trodden.....BUT< there is a great deal of hell fire and brim stone involved as well. A great part of the Bible is about punishment and damnation. Have you read it?

I've read it, in multiple translations and the Greek parts in Koine, plus the Vulgate.
I think it is neither a letter of love nor of damnation, but a collection of various things- some epic poetry, some songs, some stories, some damnation and some love.
I do not see the appeal of the deity in it, unlike other such collections of mythology, but I do not think it condemns mankind as a whole regularly.
That being said, I think very little of it shows the love of any deity. It seems more about methods of social control in the earliest books, reforms to social control in the middle, and a return to the strict social control in the last three books. (Chronologically)

I agree with you I believe it is a letter of love. I used to think it was a letter of damnation (and thought all preaching was hell, fire brimstone) until I received the infilling love and power of the Holy Spirit. Then my view began to change because my mind and heart were enlightened to understand what I was reading. I can now see a good God rather than an angry one.

I do believe it's a love letter. God tells us how much He loves us in the Bible, but He also shows us how to live our lives so we don't go through so much pain and unhappiness. I really wish people would realize this and actually study the Bible instead of running off at the mouth about something they don't understand. The world would be a much better place if people would accept God's love and guidance.

I've read it many times. The NT tends to be a message of love but not consistently and the OT tends to be very legalistic and dowwnright unforgiving, not to mention unsupportable in some of the major events like the Exodus, Flood, Creation, etc.

I've read all of it in 3 different translations. I still think it is part history, part legend and myth, and part God's message to the world. It was written by man and translated from long extinct languages by man, so all of man's shortcoming are included in it.

I have a friend that picked up the Bible and opened it and started to read. It opened to Sodom and Gomorrah and the destruction. He closed the bible and said to himself, I don't think I want to read that book.
Some years later, he became a Christian. Sort of. He is of a different way of thinking than I am.

The Lord said to Moses, "Speak to Aaron and tell him: None of your descendants, of whatever generation, who has any defect shall come forward to offer up the food of his God. Therefore, he who has any of the following defects many not come forward: he who is blind, or lame, or who has any disfigurement or malformation, or a crippled foot or hand, or who is humpbacked or weakly or walleyed, or who is afflicted with eczema, ringworm, or hernia. No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any such defect may draw near to offer up the oblations of the Lord; on account of his defect he may not draw near to offer up the food of his God." (Leviticus 21:16-21)
If the God of the Bible is really as loving as you claim, why will he not accept the love of his disfigured children?

To me the bible is the story of Gods relationship with mankind. It is truly a love story. It is the story of truth and the eternal truth has a name, Jesus: Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
