AHU (air handling unit) processes fresh (outside) and recirculated air into supply air which is then distributed to many (like branches on a tree) FCUs (fan coil units) (better described as terminal units which covers a wider range of final distribution choices FCU's, VAVs etc)

the Air handling unit conditions the air to a designed supply air temperature to be further conditioned by the terminal unit.
the fan coil unit recirculates room air and adds supply air and will heat or cool to provide comfort conditions
