Hi, Brian, golfers are like fisherman who stretch thelength of the fish they catch so never believe a word they say. People who play golf must be easily amused - spoils a good walk, as somebody so wisely said once. Anyway, keeps all the prats on the same field/course.

I remember back in the day they let old Drunk Bastard Daly hit a few balls on an airport runway and with all the bounce and roll I think they went well over 600 yards. I do remember some drives that went close or past 400 when NITRO was holding some long drive challenges about 10 years ago.

I think Neil Armstrong hitting the ball on the moon. And there were also some US Embassy guys hitting golf ball from the top of the mountain in Mongolia. I mean the ball must gone some 20 miles.

Believe it or nor until recently this record was held by Terry Wogan. He putted a ball down the asile of concorde. it took 5 seconds to travel the lencth of the asile which was travelling at mach 2. I think this ment the ball was hit something in the order of 7 miles!
I seem to recall recently some one from NASA drove a ball from the international space station which is still travelling into deep space. Many thousands of miles by now.
I know that both these are cheating

Each to their own, but I'm sure this comes from another dim witted, left wing human being who doesn't have a clue about either sport!!, clown!!
Anyway, there have been numerous long shots in golf. the longest recorded was by the Spaniard, Jose Maria Olazabal, he held a putt which was 27 miles long! (ok it was on Concorde, so they did the distance over time thing!)
Remember, "drive for show, putt for dough!!"

the record recognized by Guinness Records as longest drive in a competition is 515 yards by 64 year old Mike Austin in 1974 of the US National Seniors Open with a 43.5" steel shafted persimmon wood driver and balata ball.

well there are two records you can look at for this. one is john daly hit 398 in 1999 but i dont remember what course. and then there is another one that mr. daly hit that is 1.4 miles. this is the one that needs to be explianed. one of the courses they use to play at had a hole next to a streight road. well he hit off target killing the ball down the side of the road. it ran the road. they took a camera and followed it during play to see how far this would go and electronically messuared it at 1.4 miles. so you take your pick on what was hit the fartherest.

Amarillo Slim won a bet that he could hit a golfball a mile. The trick was, he hit the ball on a frozen lake.
