i recently rehomed my lovely affectionate german shepherd because i wanted him to live in the country and have a better quality of life rather than town. the animals in need vetted a couple in oxfordshire that seemed perfect but they only had him 10 hours and had him put to sleep even though he was not aggressive and never bit anyone. they promised to return him if he didnt settle but they took it in their own hands to destroy him. i had not yet signed the papers.

I would suspect that, given the short length of time that they had him, there is more to this story. I would suspect that perhaps they wanted him for dog fighting, and found he was too affectionate or they have sold him on. Did you see the body?

It is certainly wrong to euthanize a healthy young animal, but I don't believe that it's illegal.

To be fair, this dog may not have taken kindly to the whole "re-homing" experience -- no doubt you broke his heart when you decided to give him a better quality of life by sending him away to a country home, rather than letting him stay with the one who promised to take care of him for all of his days -- and he may have demonstrated some of the aggression that relinquished dogs sometimes develop.

Regardless, you gave him up, whether or not you actually signed the papers or not. He's no longer your concern.

Did you learn anything from this?

Had they signed a contract saying he would be returned if things didn't work?If so yes you can take legal action. If the animal shelter are reluctant to help call the papers-they will be keen to help after some bad press.

Also if you were still the legal owner then they cannot have him put down legally without your consent. You should sue them, the animal rescue place that vetted them and the vet who put him down.

If not then there's probably little you can do.

This is sad-what morons.

It`s not illegal but in this case it was immoral. I should complain to the Animals In Need as they should know as well. I would also demand an explanation, especially as you stated that you would have him back if he didn`t settle. Why didn`t these idiots contact you or the agency if they decided they didn`t want him after all? I had to have my 13 year old Yorkshire cross put to sleep recently as she was incontinent and had a tumor in her left eye, and I still can`t believe that I ageed to it even though it was the right thing to do.

I'm not sure about the laws in the UK, but in the US one can put down one's animals whenever they wish, as animals are properly considered property. Personally, I am sickened that anyone would destroy a healthy animal w/o aggression issues.

But the legality of putting one's own dog down is not really the issue in your case, as you had a verbal promise from the couple that they would do differently. Though I am not sure what papers you refer to, I would certainly look into this further as they have, in essence, broken a contract with you and have destroyed what it sounds like was still your property.

regrettably there is not any regulation to keep away from healthful animals from being placed to sleep. even nevertheless, in view of the undeniable fact which you had no longer yet signed the animal over he replaced into technically nevertheless your dogs and that they shouldn't have performed so without your say. i could touch the rescue place (i've got no longer heard of Animals in choose) and tell them you're no longer happy with what has occurred and that in case you do no longer get carry of a passable answer interior of 40 8 hours then you fairly would be reporting it to the police and particular evaluate taking criminal action against them. could additionally be properly worth contacting your community newspaper. good success. i be responsive to it wont carry your dogs back yet with any luck will supply you greater solutions.

That is just so totally wrong to put a healthy animal down. I don't know if it is illegal or not though. I know where I live a vet will NOT put a healthy animal down simply because the owners don't want him anymore.

It isn't illegal, but what these people did was wrong. I can't understand why they would have taken such a decision without thinking about it. You can try reporting them to the RSPCA, but don't expect too much.

Just a long shot, but were you waiting for some kind of payment from them for your dog, as he is a pedigree? I hope they haven't told you this, and put you through such trauma, to get out of paying.

I hope they never get their hands on another animal ever again.

if you still owned this dog,how were they allowed to put it to sleep. I would sue animals in need the vet and the couple. You must be devastated. I would also inform the police and any other animal agencies to notify them of what this couple did. I would also be determined to find out why.

Its not illegal...........but I would consider it to be deffinatly inhumane. Why on earth would you want to put a perfectly healthy animal to sleep? You said you hadnt signed papers yet....what kind of papers? Giving them ownership of the dog? If that is the case sounds like you might have a lawsuit on your hands......Good luck.
