Insteas of using Motels and Hotels for accom. We intend to rent a 4 berth camper van for a long trip up the west coast, taking in Monkey mia, Broom, Derby and finally ending our journey in Halls Creek, where we will visit Wolf Ceeek Crater and come out alive.
Our trip will last about 3 weeks and most of it will be on the road. Any tips on how to do this trip effectively and cheaply, and approx. how much money should I budget for the van? The reason we are taking a van is so we can stop off when the sceenery is best and stay as long as we like. Is travelling in WA safe and what safeguards should I be looking at? Any other practical advice from experienced travellers welcome. If you know of a place that a camper would be vunerable to theft or towns that are unsafe. This kind of info is appreciated. Thank you in advance for your advice.

I stayed in Perth in 2004. It's so beautiful, you will have a fab time.
We bought a car ($2500), a tent ($100) and an air bed ($50) on our travels as we were there for 9 months. We re-sold our car at the end of the trip for $1000 but on a 3 week trip I doubt it would be as cost effective.
I believe that it's roughly $40 a day for a 2 seater.
On our travels we saw some wonderful campervans that were very popular with travellers. Unfortuantely, I can't remember the name of the company but you will know their vans straight away as they are decorated with Ren and Stimpty, Scooby Doo etc etc.
We always used camp sites and never had any issues with security or safety. You will find that they take much better care of their surroundings in WA then we do and most campsites will have free BBQ's and pools for you to use.
One thing that I couldn't have done without on my travels was the Australian Lonely Planet Guide. That book was my bible and time and time again, it's advice on accomodation and places to visit was priceless.
The Ozzies are VERY friendly, so don't be surprised when random strangers, smiling like loons, come over and strike up conversation with you.

We drove the other way from Kununarra to Perth. We actually bought a car in Kununarra and sold it in Perth for more money then we'd paid for it! Having the freedom to do what we wanted with the car was great and really cheap. When you arrive in Perth look on the notice boards in the backpackers and internet cafes- we sold the car 2 days after advertising it so was really easy to do. We stayed in lots of the free campsites along the way and it was a bit scary being out in the bush on the 1 st night but we never saw any creepy crawlies ( apparantly their most likely to be scared of you) and we met lots of great people along the way. We paid $1000 about 250 pounds for the car - I don't how much hiring is but its worth considering this as an option. Just remember October is Spring in Perth so may still be chilly but it will get warmer as you go further North so take so warm clothes aswell as all the beach stuff. Also Petrol stations can be far apart so make sure you fill up each time and don't drive after dark as Kangaroos come out onto the road and it can be really dangerous.

Your trip sounds nice.
bear in mind that camper van hire is not cheap.
Your best bet would be to contact hire companies direct or through a travel agent to get some quotes. You can include your air fayres too.
we are off to darwin, Broome and perth next year ourselves.

I did the trip pulling a caravan. We had 4 blow outs until we stopped using re-tread tyres. The weather is too hot on the road north of Geralton and we did the trip in September (early spring).
The flies are looking for shady places .... like your van, so keep fly screens in place when u stop.
The local aboriginal communities don't like to be thought of as tourist sights ... some idiots will suggest you drive over to their part of town, but just say, "Thanks" and keep out of there.
The kangaroos are as tough as donkeys, but lower to the ground. They can cause a lot of damage if you hit one. I agree with bushbaby ... from dusk to dawn, don't drive.

Aussies in Iraq. We were there from the start. We heard a unit of 30 SAS took an airforce runway held by 300 Iraqis just hours into the war. Our PM (Prime Minister) is talking of increasing our numbers there. He announced this just before UK talked of their withdrawl.
Not everyone here agrees with the PM's stand on Iraqi war. It's a B**sted of a war.

I don't know if any campervan rental companies will let u leave their campervan at Halls Creek.U may get away with leaving it in Darwin if its a large company
Some different rental companies are Britz,Avis,Hertz or Budget
