WHAT?! what a horrible thing to happen! i'm not sure if it's illegal, but it sounds like if you hadn't signed the papers yet the dog was not legally theirs. in that case, it can't possibly be legal for them to have him put down. i'd contact your local animal control and ask if anything can be done. wow, what is wrong with people?! sorry this happened to you and the poor dog.

Unfortunately there is no law to prevent healthy animals from being put to sleep. However, in view of the fact that you had not yet signed the animal over he was technically still your dog and they shouldn't have done so without your say. I would contact the rescue place (I've not heard of Animals in Need) and tell them you are not happy with what has happened and that if you do not receive a satisfactory answer within 48 hours then you will be reporting it to the police and possibly consider taking legal action against them. May also be worth contacting your local newspaper.
Good Luck. I know it wont bring your dog back but hopefully will provide you with more answers.

ATTENTION!!!!!!! This happens more then you think.. Listen. Ask where they took the dog to be put to sleep. Your dog is probably wide awake somewhere running around having a great time while the people you gave him to are enjoying the $300 to $500 dollars they sold him for. See where they took him and get a letter from that vet that they put him to sleep. A vet won't just put a dog to sleep with out proof of ownership. And YOU do it don't let them give you the papers or the run around.. You owe it to your dog!!!!!! DON"T BE NAIVE!!!!!

I would like to see this story in the newspapers and on the news.
I would like to see the people who did this unforgivable act, exposed in public and explain their reasons.
As far as I can see, there is no acceptable reason for your dog to have been 'murdered', when it could have been returned to you.
Harsh words, perhaps, but please do not leave this act unexplained.
Even if your dog was found to be ill by the potential new owners, they should have come back to you before taking action.
Surely the vet who destroyed your dog questioned the sudden owners of the German Shepherd.
You must be absolutely devastated. Fight for the memory of your dog and to stop this happening again. Please.

HOW AWFUL !!! what were these people thinking?? They had no right to put that dog down and especially only having him for 10 hours!! I would call the vet that did this and ask him why,, what was the purpose,,,then I would call your local animal control shelter and she what rights you have or maybe call your police department. They could tell you what steps you could take. I wish you the best of luck !!

Had they signed a contract saying he would be returned if things didn't work?If so yes you can take legal action. If the animal shelter are reluctant to help call the papers-they will be keen to help after some bad press.
If not then there's probably little you can do.
This is sad-what morons.

OMG!!! These people must be monsters. Don't think its illegal if the dog is in your care(you are the owner). I would certainly be having a word with the vet involved. If they didn't use a vet then the RSPCA would be your next port of call. You really have my sympathy on this, what is wrong with some people?

I would definetly check with the vet that did this. They may not have had him put to sleep like some of the other people have suggested.
I have had animals put to sleep before because they were obviously dying. The vets that did would not put them down until they made sure it was necessary.

Sadly, it's not illegal to put a healthy dog to sleep, but you may have legal recourse since they'd agreed to return him to you if he didn't settle. Go back to Animals In Need and see what they say.
What a horrible thing to happen.
