what can i do to help the poor animal, he seems like not having problems for breathing, he is always coughing badly, it's like a gag, sounds like he is congested. like when you have a flu. the dog is 10 years old, the vet said that its normal for that type of dog and it's due to his age.

I know there must be something to get the dogs health get back on track.

Is it safe to give your dog over the counter medicines, like Robitussin?

You should have a vet take some chest xrays. Chronic cough is a symptom of heart disease or failure. OTC meds will not help, and if the source of the cause is infection, like pneumonia, you actually want the dog to cough and be able to expel the mucous in the lungs.

YOU should take him to your own personal vet, someone you trust. I would ask them to do a blood test to make sure this poor dog doen't have Heart Worms. I have seen from experience constant coughing, and this gagging whizzing sounds could be telling the owner the dog is sick and needs medical attention immediiatly !! Good Luck

I would have your friend take the dog to a different Vet at least for a second opinion, and some recommendation for medications that would help... Do not give OTC meds to dogs, even though they live and breathe like we do, their systems are entirely different and it could have very traumatic results. For instance Chocolate is poisonous to dogs, yet we can eat it hand over fist....
